JOINT TRAINING FOR MALAYSIAN AND THAI MARITIME ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

LANGKAWI (Kedah, Malaysia), May 10 (Bernama) -- One hundred and eighty maritime enforcement personnel from Malaysia and Thailand are taking part in a six-day training programme.

The training, which started Monday and is codenamed Seaex Thamal, is to enhance their efficiency in keeping their territorial waters safe from pirates, smugglers and other criminals.

The participants are from the Royal Malaysian Navy, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Marine Operation Force, Royal Thailand Navy and Royal Thailand Marine.

Region III Commander First Admiral Datuk Pahlawan Abd Rahman Abd Karim said the training was divided in two phases, the first at the Malacca Straits and the second in the South China Sea.

Abdul Rahman, who launched the training here, told reporters that the training would pave the way for greater cooperation between the marine forces of the two countries.

Also present at the launch was Chief Of Staff Naval Area Command Phuket Rear Admiral Rungsant Sattayanukul.

The closing ceremony would be held in Phuket.
