DETENTION OF SINGAPOREAN NOT LINKED TO OSAMA'S DEATH
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) - The detention of Singaporean Abdul Majid Kunji Mohamad on Friday has nothing to do with Al-Qaeda or the death of its leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan last week.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Majid's detention under the Internal Security Act is to prevent untoward incidents as he is linked to militant groups in southern Philippines.
"The Singapore intelligence and related agencies have also been informed of this matter. It was done after close monitoring of foreign militants who will eventually be sent home," he told a press conference at Bukit Aman here Tuesday.
Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar on Monday announced Majid's
detention for alleged funnelling of funds and providing logistical support to militants in southern Philippines.
He said police investigation into alleged attempts to make Christianity the official religion had nothing to do with race, personal background and politics.
It was to prevent groups from violating the law and to safeguard national security.
