MALAYSIAN ARMY CHIEF MEETS THAI COUNTERPART
BANGKOK, May 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Army chief General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin met his Thai counterpart General Prayuth Chan-ocha at the latter's office, here, Tuesday.
They met at the Royal Thai Army headquarters at 1.30pm.
The visiting general was briefed on the Royal Thai Army's missions and structure after the courtesy call.
Then Zulkifeli proceeded to the Royal Thai Army Command and General
Staff College, here, where he was bestowed with the Distinguish Alumnus Award of the college by Prayuth.
Zulkifeli had enrolled at the college from Oct 1991 to Oct 1992 when he was a major then.
During the ceremony, Zulkifeli received a certificate and a plaque, and his name was engraved at the college's Hall of Fame.
In his speech, Zulkifeli said the ceremony reflected the long and cordial relationship enjoyed between the armies of the two nations.
"The period of tutelage which I spent here at this college had not only opened a new dimension of military thoughts, but inculcated in me the ability to view common problems from the perspective of both sides of the border," he said.
He said this was of immeasurable importance for the armies of both nations as it afforded the development of a more comprehensive and holistic approach by synergising the strength of both armies.
"During my tenure as commander of the Malaysian 8th Infantry Brigade located across the Golok River, I was able to interact and coordinate with my Thai Army counterpart effectively, partly because we came from the same alumni."
He said the armies of both countries had faced many challenges together successfully and hoped their relationship could be further enhanced.
Zulkifeli is scheduled to call on Thai Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon at the Defence Ministry, here, tomorrow.
Defence advisor at the Malaysian embassy in Thailand, Brig Gen Azmy Yahya, was also present throughout Zulkifeli's official visit.
Zulkifeli is scheduled to leave Thailand on Thursday.
