MAHMOUD ABBAS WILL NOT RUN FOR NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
By Saleh Jadallah
GAZA STRIP, May 11 (Bernama) -- The president of Palestinian authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas declared on Tuesday that he will not run for the next presidential election, due to be held after one year, as the two rival movements Fatah and Hamas had agreed in their reconciliation pact formalised in Cairo, Egypt on May 4.
Speaking during a meeting for Fatah revolutionary council in the West Bank, Abbas said his movement has a will to implement the obligations of the Palestinian reconciliation.
"We are serious to reach the reconciliation and we want it," Abbas said.
He pointed out that some people had suspected Fatah's intention to achieve the reconciliation but his movement proved its serious stance to end the four-year-old Palestinian rift. Abbas also noted that the Palestinian unity was very significant for the peace process with Israel.
He perceived the Palestinian situation would be stronger in front of the international conferences and accords.
"When we took part in the Annapolis conference, the Americans and the Israelis told us that no accord could be implemented without a unity," added the secular leader referring to the unsuccessful Middle East peace conference in the United States in 2007.
Also in a dramatic change, the head of Hamas political Bureau Khaled Mishael said they were ready to give Israel a period of one year to examine its intention for establishing the Palestinian state.
"Our aim is to establish a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders and we examined the Israeli intentions for dozens of time since the Oslo and Madrid accords, but for the sake of the Palestinian reconciliation and the revolution in Egypt we are ready to give it another year to test their intentions," said Mishael while speaking to the media in Egypt.
Meanwhile, the head of the assembly of the Palestinian independent figures in the West Bank Khaled Asaf said that the two rival factions, Fatah and Hamas, agreed to free the prisoners from both sides simultaneously in the next few days.
