AUSTRALIA, SRI LANKA SUBMIT BIDS TO HOST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES
KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Two cities vying to host the 2018
Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast (Australia) and Hambantota (Sri Lanka) tabledtheir bid papers during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) executive committee meeting here Wednesday.
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Vice President, Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar who headed the committee during the presentation said the final decision for the 2018 Games host job would be decided during the federation's general assembly in St Kitts & Nevis, in the Caribbean, on Nov 11, this year.
"Today's presentation marks only the start of the selection process for the 2018 Games to decide whether Gold Coast or Hambantota will get the job.
"The candidature files have been formally lodged with the CGF, an extensive evaluation process will get underway, beginning with an analysis of the technical aspect of each city's bid document," he told reporters here Wednesday.
Tunku Imran who is also the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president said the Evaluation Committee's work begins next month and the final evaluation report will be completed in September.
"On Nov 11, each city will make their final presentation to the General Assembly in front of five members of the Evaluation Committee, including the CGF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mike Hooper, before the votes are cast," he said.
Also present during today's ceremony were representatives from both
countries, President of Australian Commonwealth Games Association, Sam Coffa, Chairman of Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid, Mark Stockwell, Minister of Sports for Sri Lanka and Co-Chairman of Organizing Committee, Mahindananda Aluthgamaga and Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka and Co-Chairman, Organizing Committee, Ajith Nivard Cabraal.
Australian' Coffa said he was confident Australia would have an opportunity to become the host for 2018 Commonwealth Games.
"Australians are passionate about sports. We have the experience in handling the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, so we feel it is the best opportunity to bid for the 2018 in Gold Coast," he said.
He said they are going to invest an estimated AUD370 million (RM1.2 billion) to build new venues for the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan, Ajith Nivard Cabraal said although his country was not as superb as the Gold Coast, they would prove their differences and determine to surprise the world.
"We are confident we can deliver. This is because we have several new facilities built five years ago and will add more infrastructure by 2016.
"We will invest about 1.15 billion Pounds (RM5.6 billion) to build new facilities, including the Games village, transportation and accommodation as well," he said.
The Hambantota's bid slogan is 'Together. From the heart', and the southern Sri Lankan city will host the first South Asian Beach Games from Sept 8-14 to prove their organizational skills.
The 20th Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to Aug 3, 2014.
