NEW GENERATION IN UMNO MUST UNDERSTAND COUNTRY'S NEW POLITICAL LANDSCAPE - DPM

PARIS, May 12 (Bernama) -- United Malays national Organisation (Umno) deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin has called on the new generation of leaders in the party to understand the country's new political landscape and be more open-minded in order to remain relevant.

Muhyiddin, in his message to Umno members in conjunction with the party's 65th anniversary celebration today, said Umno was sensitive to public opinions and new demands while understanding the changed socio-political environment in the country, which was unlike that 10 or 20 years ago.

The deputy prime minister said in the current political scenario, the approach and mindset required of Umno members was to consider the perceptions and perspectives in various matters related to society, like the economy, social sphere, culture, race relations and international relations.

"The members must be prepared to do what is called political transformation, not only in approach but also in terms of mindset," he said to Malaysian reporters, Wednesday.

Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister, is in the French capital since Monday to attend the Unesco executive board meeting.

Muhyiddin said Umno which had gone through the process of engagement with the other component parties in Barisan Nasional (BN) would continue to play a vital role in community development and tackling the rousing of racial sentiments, which of late had become worrying.

He said at the moment, raising of sensitive racial issues could easily stoke anger and uneasiness among the people.

"While education could help tackle racial issues, community leaders and political organisations also have a role to play by being more open-minded and not too narrow-minded."

He said Umno's struggle and its concept of solidarity with the other BN component parties had become even more important in the Malaysian context and in the current situation.

"The engagement process involving the BN components, understanding the aspirations of the people, and moderation are important. There's nothing better than moderation," he added.

Muhyiddin hoped that Umno's anniversary this year would inject a new spirit in the party members to strive for the religion, society and nation amidst the new political landscape.Umno is the political party leading the ruling Barisan Nasional.
