MALAYSIA TO STUDY GERMAN, AUSTRIAN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION SYSTEMS
From Leslean Arshad
PARIS, May 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will send a delegation to Austria and Germany to study the two countries' vocational education systems, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said European countries were undeniably more advanced in the application of innovation and creativity in their education systems.
"We want to see what we can learn (from them)," he told the Malaysian media here on Wednesday at the end of his visit to two European cities -- Copenhagen to attend the Asia-Europe Meeting for Ministers of Education (ASEMME) and Paris for the 186th Unesco executive meeting.
He described Malaysia's participation in international conferences like the ASEMME as important because it allowed Malaysia to build strategic relationships with European countries.
"It is vital to create such relationships so we can adapt (the best systems)and tailor them to our country's situation and context," he added.
At the ASEMME, held at the Axelborg Hall, Muhyiddin delivered a speech, titled "Business and Industrial Operations in Education."
Muhyiddin said the government had put in place plans to transform the country's education system that would see, among others, the reorganisation of its vocational education system, giving it equal importance to the academic education system.
This reorganisation would involve curriculum, certification, teaching staff and approach to make the system more practical-based rather than theory, he said.
While here, Muhyiddin visited the Lycee Dorian vocational school which specialises in mecatronics, topography and glassmaking.
Meanwhile, at the Unesco meeting, Muhyiddin shared with member countries about the achievements of Malaysia's education system.
He told Malaysian journalists later that the speech was well-received.
"Education leaders worldwide regard Malaysia highly," he added.
Muhyiddin will leave for home on Thursday.
