MALAYSIA RECEIVES SUPPORT IN PARIS

FROM LESLEAN ARSHAD

PARIS, May 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's offer to fill one of the nine
vacancies in the 21-member World Heritage Committee (WHC) was met with support, indicating progress in interactions with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) member countries, said Information Comunication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.

He said Malaysia had expressed its desire to be elected as a committee member during a meeting hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, here on Tuesday, which was attended by all Unesco member countries present for their executive board meeting.

"Malaysia's wish to join the committe is already known. We hope our early application will bring in more support," he said when met by Malaysian reporters here on Wednesday.

In efforts to win more support, Rais said Malaysia would interact through the internet, exchanged visits and publications as well as communicate with those interested in heritage-related fields such as the World Heritage Site.

"We will draw attention and express our noble intention (to compete)," he said.

While speaking at the Unesco executive board meeting on Tuesday, Muhyiddin said Malaysia hoped to play a bigger role in preserving the world's heritage for future generations if selected to join the WHC this year.

Muhyiddin said Malaysia had many specialists in archaeology, cultural heritage management and protection, and their skills could be used to increase protection of world heritage.

This is the first time Malaysia has stepped forward to offer itself as a member of the committee.

The professionals proposed by Malaysia to join the committee are experts in the relevant fields, including Heritage Commissioner Prof Zuraina Majid and her deputy, Prof A. Ghafar Ahmad.

On efforts to obtain World Heritage Site recognition for the Lenggong Valley in Perak and the Bujang Valley in Kedah, Rais said it was showing positive development and evaluation will be known in January 2012.

He said the Heritage Commissioner had submitted the relevant documents for recognition.

"These two places are rising to a unique level in Malaysia because they both have old civilisations," he added.
