MALAYSIAN, BANGLADESHI KILLED IN SHIPYARD EXPLOSION IN SINGAPORE

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

SINGAPORE, May 12 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian and a Bangladeshi were killed in an explosion at a shipyard in Benoi Road Thursday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said initial investigations revealed the duo were working on a barge undergoing maintenance work when the blast occurred.

Local television channel, Channel NewsAsia, reported a SCDF spokesman as saying they died on the spot.

A witness the news agency spoke to, said the explosion shattered some glass panels in her office across the road. It also caused a ceiling panel to collapse.

Wishing to be known only as Mandy, she said the ground shook when the explosion occurred.

Another eye witness, Adrian Lee, 34, who was in the area for a meeting about four factories away from the explosion site, said he saw people fleeing after the blast caused a roof to collapse.

The manpower ministry has identified the deceased as a 43-year-old Malaysian and a 20-year-old Bangladeshi.

Both the SCDF and the police said they received a call about the incident about 1.30pm.
