MALAYSIAN CRAFT PROMOTION FEATURES 55 ENTREPRENEURS

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia) May 13 (Bernama) -- Fifty-five handicraft entrepreneurs from Sarawak, Sabah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Melaka will take part in the 2011 Malaysian Craft Promotion programme in Miri, said Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (MHDC) Sarawak branch director Sahaimi Abdul Manaf.

The programme organised by the MHDC and Miri City Council will be held at the Miri Handicraft Centre from May 20 to 25.

He said he is confident it will encourage and give entrepreneurs a chance to promote and market the craft products in a centre frequented by visitors.

"In line with the theme of crafts to generate the economy, entrepreneurs will sell various craft products ranging from textiles, the forest products, metal, clay and more," he told Bernama here Thursday.

Activities such as interactive craft education, heritage craft workshops and cultural performances can encourage interest and use of local craft products in people's daily life.

For example, craft education is an interactive activity for participants comprising primary and secondary school students who will be taught how to draw and paint batik, weave baskets and do beadwork, he added.

He said a heritage craft arts workshop on rattan weaving will also be held with the MHDC and Sarawak National Arts and Culture Department, as well as cultural performances with cultural associations in Miri and the State Information Department.
