MALAYSIAN KIDNAPPED IN SULU ISLAND, SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES

KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian citizen is reported to have been kidnapped by a group of 10 armed men whose identity is not known in Sulu Island, southern Philippines on Sunday.

In a statement issued here Thursday night, the Foreign Ministry said the victim was Mohd Nazarudin Saidin, 38, from Sungai Buloh, Selangor.

According to the statement, the ministry and the Consulate-General of Malaysia in Davao City, Mindanao had contacted the victim's family on the case.

"The Consulate-General is cooperating with the local authorities including the Philippine National Police (PNP) to get more details and the latest developments on the kidnapping.

"So far no group has claimed responsibility. The Philippines authorities are continuing investigations to ascertain the identity of the group," the statement said.

The minsitry would continue to monitor the case and cooperate on the matter with the authorities in the Philippines, it added.
