EGYPTIANS TO HOLD DEMONSTRATIONS IN SUPPORT OF PALESTINIAN CAUSE
GAZA CITY, May 14 (Bernama) -- Egyptians will take part in demonstrations along the borders with Israel to show their solidarity with the Palestinian cause, to mark the 63rd anniversary of 'Nakba', when Israel expelled Palestinians from their homeland and founded its statehood in 1948.
The pro-Palestinian Egyptians gathered in Tahreer Sequeer, where the protest against former president Hosni Mubarak took place, in a preparation for the mass protests near the borders on Sunday.
At Tahreer Square, the protesters chanted slogans which included, "We sacrifice our souls and blood for Palestine".
According to Egyptian officials, the Egyptian security forces would prevent the demonstrators from approaching the frontier to avoid clashes with Israel which had a historical conflict with Egypt in 1967 and 1973.
The pro-Palestinian movement began to widely appear in Egypt after the Mubarak regime was toppled in a popular Egyptian revolution.
The Egyptian Interior Ministry has issued a statement, calling on the demonstrators to cancel their planned protests to protect Egypt which was facing a difficult situation after the revolution. Nevertheless, the ministry has expressed its support for the Palestinian people and their cause.
On Friday, thousands of Egyptians performed the Al-Fajer (Dawn) prayer in several mosques as part of a campaign on the social website Facebook, to support Palestine.
The Muslim Brotherhood Party, which shares the same ideology with the Palestinian Hamas movement, calls its members and supporters to take part in the demonstration.
"Palestine is the central cause in the Arab and Muslim World and it should be the second step towards liberation after liberating Egypt," said Muslim Brotherhood activist Taha Rantisy.
