BIOMETRICS TO CURB CROSS BORDER CRIME, SAYS MINISTER

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- The biometric system to be introduced in June will check cross border crime involving foreigners, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Friday.

He hoped the biometric fingerprint scanner would help in the handling of such crimes as human and drug trafficking and the smuggling of arms.

"The biometric system will increase our effectiveness in monitoring
tourists, students and other groups entering the country by land or sea," Hishammuddin told reporters here after launching a treatment and care centre in Chow Kit here to rehabilitate drug addicts.

With the support of the early warning screening system, it could also help curb drug trafficking, he said.

The system only requires 20 seconds to scan the fingerprint of anyone entering the country.

As a start, the system would be used at 61 of the 96 active entry points in the country, Hishammuddin said.

On the centre, he said that it was part of an outreach programme offering help to drug addicts who wanted to be rehabilitated.
