Iranian Envoy Welcomes Reconciliation Agreement among Palestinians

TEHRAN, May 14 (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Qazanfar Roknabadi welcomed the reconciliation agreement signed among different Palestinian groups, including Fatah and Hamas, calling it a positive move towards the liberation of Palestinian territories.
Roknabadi made the remarks in a meeting with heads of groups and well-known personalities of Palestinians in Lebanon on the eve of 63rd anniversary of occupation of Palestine.
He welcomed serious steps of Palestinian groups to achieve national unity and solve domestic disputes and congratulated Palestinians on the move.
He expressed hope that the move leads to liberation of Palestine as well as Mosque of al-Aqsa.
The ambassador asked all Palestinians to commemorate May 15 Day actively and show to the whole world and the Zionist regime that Palestine nation and its resisting youth are alive and do not let the international Zionism confiscate their rights.
The meeting was head days after Thirteen Palestinian groups including, Fatah and Hamas, signed a landmark unity deal ending their long-running division.
Prior to the agreement, the Islamic movement Hamas was at loggerheads with Fatah, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, since Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January of 2006. After winning the elections, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip ending months of bloody conflict with Fatah allied security forces. Egypt and other Arab countries' attempts of reaching a reconciliation deal between the two largest Palestinian factions had earlier failed.
According to internal sources, the agreement will include formation of a caretaker government until elections take place in both the West Bank and Gaza.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi welcomed the Palestinian reconciliation agreement, and called it a positive move towards materializing Palestinian people's goals and rights.
