UNDERSTAND TRADITION, CULTURE TO FACE MODERN CHALLENGES, SAYS DEPUTY MINISTER

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- The younger generation must not forget
their traditions and culture in facing the challenges of the modern culture.

Instead, they must understand the tradition and culture, which had survived
for thousands of years, as the two were essential elements that could create
harmony and strengthen unity among the people in the country, Deputy Information
Communication and Culture Minister Maglin Dennis D'cruz said.

He said this to reporters after opening the Cultural Carnival in conjunction
with the Hindu New Year celebration at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)
Auditorium here Sunday.

The carnival, the sixth in its series, was jointly organised by the ministry
and the Malaysian Indian Youth Council.

Maglin said the participation of the younger generation in such a cultural
activity would ensure that their spare time was used for something beneficial.

This, inadvertently, would prevent them from getting involved in social
problems like drug addiction, illegal racing or gangsterism, he added.
