UMNO WILL CONTINUE ITS STRUGGLE EVEN IN STATES IT NO LONGER RULES, SAYS ABDULLAH

JITRA (Malaysia), Sept 6 (Bernama) -- United Malays National Organisation (Umno) will continue its agenda of struggle for the race, religion and country even in the states it no longer rules, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The prime minister and Umno president said Umno was never tired of
struggling for its cause although it had to accept the people's decision in the March 8 general election.

"What is important is for us to continue with our struggle and not just work when we are in control," he said at the breaking of fast organised by the
northern state of Kedah Umno Liaison Committee, here Friday night.

Abdullah was confident that Barisan Nasional (BN) would be able to wrest
back Kedah due to continuous efforts by the federal government to look after the
lot of the people in the state.

"We will correct whatever weaknesses and it is up to us to determine the
future. It is not impossible for BN led by Umno to win back Kedah,"
he said.

Abdullah said the federal government would continue to help the people in
opposition-held states and this was proven in the 2009 Budget.

"The government will continue to focus on developing the agriculture
industry as it could generate income for the people and thus improve their
standard of living."

He said besides helping the poor improve their lot, the 2009 Budget also
enhanced the social security net by increasing assistance for the low-income
group by up to RM720 per month for those in the peninsula and more in East
Malaysia states of Sabah and Sarawak.

"Previously, those entitled to the financial assistance numbered 54,000 but
now (under 2009 Budget), the number has increased to 110,000," he added.
