Iran to Start Drilling of Phase 14 of South Pars Field

TEHRAN, May 16 (FNA)- Iran will begin drilling operations in phase 14 of the South Pars oil and gas field in the current week, an Iranian oil official announced.
The operating manager of the phase 14, Esmaeil Gallehdari, said that the drilling of the first well of the phase is scheduled to start this week, which is three months earlier than the previous planning, the official website of the Iranian Oil Ministry Shana reported on Sunday.

The official noted that a total of 44 appraisal wells -- used to assess characteristics of a proven hydrocarbon accumulation -- will be drilled in this phase of the South Pars.

Iran has 137.6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 29.61 trillion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, ranking third in the world in oil reserves and second in gas reserves.

In April, the director said the eight remaining phases of South Pars had to be completed in 35 months based on a timeline provided by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iran has the world's second largest natural gas reserves after Russia.

The South Pars gas field is shared by Iran and Qatar. The Iranian share, which is divided into 24 phases, has about 14 trillion cubic meters of gas, or about eight percent of the total world reserves, and more than 18 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources.
