JAYALALITHAA VOWS TO RESHAPE TAMIL NADU

By P. Vijian

CHENNAI, May 16 (Bernama) -- Like the mythological phoenix that rises from
the ashes, the 'Iron Lady' of Tamil Nadu politics J. Jayalalithaa has returned
against all odds, as chief minister for the third time.

The former South Indian movie goddess Monday took the oath as the new chief
minister in a colourful and power-packed political career, spanning three
decades.

The 63-year-old has promised sweeping reforms -- steady power supply, slash
in prices of consumer items and rejig state economic policy.

"My first priority is to restore law and order. The state's economy has been
totally derailed, there has been a lot of regression in the last five years.

"It is almost like having gone back to the dark ages," Jayalalithaa, who is
also general-secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)
said after her victory.

She steered her party-led alliance to a massive victory last Friday,
trouncing the once influential Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by
octogenarian M.Karunanidhi, and wresting 202 of the 234 seats in the state
legislative assembly.

Keeping the home ministry portfolio to herself, Jayalalithaa's 33-minister
cabinet would rule India's second most industrialised state -- now home to
foreign automobile giants, ranging from Ford, Renault-Nizzan, Mitsubishi and
Toyota to Hyundai.

At the swearing-in ceremony held at Madras University, administered by the
state's governor Surjit Singh, she spoke in her native Tamil language.

The new chief minister is a strong believer of astrology. The grapevine has
it that Jayalalithaa planned her swearing-in ceremony to coincide with an
auspicious time based on noted astrological beliefs.

Jayalalithaa, known to have been the first Tamil heroine who appeared in
movies donning skirts, besides her famous saree-clad films, had paired along
South Indian movie legends -- AIADMK founder M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji
Ganesan.

During her acting career spanning nearly 15 years, she had acted in nearly
300 movies, comprising Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

Despite her stupendous success in the cine world, followed by her mammoth
foothold in Tamil Nadu politics, Jayalalithaa, who has never married, is back
with a vengeance, in typical moviedom fashion.

She appears to be the stuff that legends are made of. The phoenix has risen.
