Iranian FM Calls on ECO to Revise, Tighten Cooperation

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi underlined that the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) enjoys huge capacities and potentials to become a major world bloc, and called on the member states to review plans to further boost and bolster cooperation.
"Welfare and tranquility of the nations require a serious revision of economic and trade ties" among the ECO member states, Salehi said, addressing the 21st meeting of the regional planning council of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) here in Tehran on Tuesday.

He said members should show a serious political will in support of the materialization of their economic ties and cooperation.

Salehi mentioned that ECO members' trade exchanges with the outside world amounted to $bln630 in 2009, and lamented that only 7% of the said figure pertained to exchanges among the member states of the regional organization.

"If we had had a constructive and rooted move in connection with intra-organizational trade, this figure could have amounted to 20%, which would have helped the welfare of the ECO member nations to a large extent," Salehi said.

Stressing that members should make more use of each other's capacities and capabilities, the Iranian top diplomat called on ECO members to replace euro and dollar with national currencies in their intra-organizational exchanges.

He cautioned that use of euro or dollar can provide those outside ECO with a leverage to trouble trade exchanges among ECO member states whenever they feel necessary.
