Secretary-General Calls War on Drugs, Terrorism ECO's Top Priority

TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary-General of the Economic Cooperation Organization said war against drugs, terrorism and organized crimes sets the priority for his organization.
Addressing the 21st meeting of the regional planning council of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) here in Tehran on Tuesday, Mohammad Yahya Maroufi said, "Campaign against narcotics, terrorism and organized crimes set ECO's priorities and the organization is moving on this path in cooperation with Europe."
He further called for tighter cooperation among the regional states, and said, "We expect that regional blocs show more enthusiasm for cooperation with ECO."
Elsewhere, the secretary-general urged enhancement of trade ties among ECO member states, and said trade cooperation can guarantee economic progress in the region.
"Cooperation in the region can be materialized only though a fair liberalization of trade," he stated.
He reminded that establishment of a regional bloc for industrial and trade progress constituted the main goal pursued by ECO formation, and lamented, "This progress has came to a halt in the last three years. In issues like customs we have not yet reached an agreement and we should have a restart in this ground."
In some relevant remarks in the same meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called on the member states to review plans to further boost and bolster cooperation, reminding that ECO enjoys huge capacities and potentials to become a major actor on the international scene.
"Welfare and tranquility of the nations require a serious revision of economic and trade ties" among the ECO member states, Salehi said at the 21st meeting of the ECO regional planning council today.
He said members should show a serious political will in support of the materialization of their economic ties and cooperation.
Salehi mentioned that ECO members' trade exchanges with the outside world amounted to $bln630 in 2009, and lamented that only 7% of the said figure pertained to exchanges among the member states of the regional organization.
"If we had had a constructive and rooted move in connection with intra-organizational trade, this figure could have amounted to 20%, which would have helped the welfare of the ECO member nations to a large extent," Salehi said.
Stressing that members should make more use of each other's capacities and capabilities, the Iranian top diplomat called on ECO members to replace euro and dollar with national currencies in their intra-organizational exchanges.
He cautioned that use of euro or dollar can provide those outside ECO with a leverage to trouble trade exchanges among ECO member states whenever they feel necessary.
