Enemies Unable to Undermine Iran-Kuwait Ties
TEHRAN,May 18 (FNA)- The US and the Zionist regime of Israel cannot harm the solid and brotherly relations between Iran and Kuwait, an Iranian diplomat said.
Iran's Charge d'affaires in Kuwait Mohammad Shahabi cautioned about the efforts made by the enemies to sow discord and stir sectarian strife between the two nations, but meantime stressed, "These measures will lead to nowhere as efforts made by the two countries' cultivated class will not allow others to rock the boat."
The diplomat underlined that skillful and wise directors of the two countries' foreign ministries appreciate the importance of Iran-Kuwait relations, and would not allow any third party to undermine these relations.
"Iran has never been after warmongering and provocative actions," the envoy stressed, and added, "Iranians want glory, honor, peace, stability and establishment of security for the entire region."
Kuwait's media outlets alleged last May that the country's officials had arrested a team of spies with links to Iran.
Almost a year later, a Kuwait City court sentenced to death two Iranians and a Kuwaiti national for allegedly belonging to an Iranian spy ring.
Following the court decree, the Kuwaiti government expelled a number of Iranian diplomats from the country. Iran reciprocated the action with firing a number of Kuwaiti diplomats.
Following the court ruling in Kuwait, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi dismissed the allegations about the operation of a spy cell in Kuwait with links to Iran, and described the move as a "conspiracy" against the Muslim countries.
Salehi made the remarks in a telephone conversation with his Kuwaiti counterpart Mohammed al-Sabah, who had earlier accused Iran of having links with a spy network in his country and claimed that Iran is meddling in the other countries' domestic affairs.
"The old issue raised by a court in Kuwait and linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran is a plan pursued by those malevolent (forces) who do not desire good relations between the two countries," Salehi said.
"This (plan) is nothing but a conspiracy aimed at creating discord between Islamic countries in the region," he added.
After all these ups and downs, now Salehi is due to visit Kuwait on Wednesday to confer with the country's officials on the bilateral ties and the latest developments in the region.
"The visit will take place in pursuance of the moves made by the diplomatic apparatus to consult and exchange views with the regional countries on bilateral relations and regional issues," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.
Salehi had earlier on Saturday confirmed his trip to Kuwait, and said, "I will most likely visit Kuwait this week."
Iran and Kuwait enjoy cordial diplomatic relations. After Iran came under increasing pressure from the West in recent years over its civilian nuclear program, Kuwait demanded the US to respect Iranian sovereignty and seek a diplomat solution to the matter.
In February, Iran and Kuwait inked an agreement to consolidate the industrial and customs relations between the two neighboring countries.
Also, Tehran and Kuwait City reached an economic agreement in the final day of the 10th meeting of Iran-Kuwait trade committee held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran.
Tehran has in recent years stepped up its efforts to establish and boost ties with the neighboring states, the Persian Gulf littoral states in particular.
