EC Secretary: Sanctions Defused by Economic Leap

TEHRAN,May 18 (FNA)- Iran's economic progress proves inefficiency of the sanctions imposed by the West against the country, Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council Mohsen Rezayee said, adding that enemies will soon feel forced to give up economic pressures against Tehran since they will see a further leap in Iran's economic progress.
Speaking in a Q/A session in the central city of Qom, Rezayee said sanctions have already proved useless, and assured the participants in the meeting that the western powers would soon be discouraged from continuing the sanction policy against Iran.

"Economic Jihad will start a leap in Iran and will prove to the people that sanctions have been useless, " he said, and underlined, "Once enemies observe this economic leap, they will ease sanctions" against Iran.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei called the new Iranian year as the 'Year of Economic Jihad', asking the nation to make all-out efforts to accelerate the country's economic progress.

In a televised address on the occasion of the advent of the Iranian New Year on March 21, Ayatollah Khamenei called for all-out jihad-like efforts by the Iranian nation and officials in order to pave the grounds for a decade of economic growth.

Over a month later in April, Ayatollah Khamenei said "Iran is clearly and definitely destined for progress", and called on all governmental and private sectors as well as the ordinary people to be attentive to the requirements of progress in the current Iranian year.

Different Iranian officials hailed the Supreme Leader's initiative in naming the Iranian new year as "The Year of Economic Jihad", saying that the move would stimulate the country's economy.

"Over the past decades Supreme Leader (of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei), with his complete awareness of domestic and international issues, has chosen a name for every new year that has motivated society," Iran's Ambassador to Malaysia Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi said in April.

"Considering the country's situation and international issues the Leader has named the new year as the year of Economic Jihad," he added.

"In the Economic Jihad program both short-term and long-term views must be taken into consideration as they are indispensable," Zahedi said.

"While making long-term economic plans, projects with short-term objectives must also be taken into consideration an example of which is the targeted subsidy plan," the Iranian envoy added.

Iran's ambassador to Malaysia also said that while carrying out long-term economic planning, attention should also be paid to moves with short-term goals such as the subsidy reform plan, etc.

The Iranian diplomat went on to say that developing the country's infrastructure, public transportation, attracting tourists and foreign investment, and job creation are among the factors that can help the country's economic growth.
