Senior MP: Attacks on Religious Sites Boost Bahrainis' Solidarity
TEHRAN,May 18 (FNA)- A senior Iranian legislator blasted the Bahraini regime for destroying religious sites in the country, and said such provocative acts would only strengthen solidarity among the Bahraini people.
"Such actions will not lead to the withdrawal and weakening of the Bahraini nation, rather they will reinvigorate solidarity in the popular uprising against the al-Khalifa regime more than before," member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Parviz Sorouri told FNA on Wednesday.
"The extensiveness of popular protests against the al-Khalifa regime has cause horror and panic among the Bahraini and Saudi regimes, hence they have resorted to the strategy of creating a rift between the country's Shiites and Sunnis," he stated.
"They seek to stir sectarian strife between the Shiite and Sunni Muslims, a thought which will never be materialized considering the oppressions that the al-Khalifa has made against the Bahraini Muslims," Sorouri reiterated.
Bahraini security forces have been brutally suppressing anti-government protesters and destroying several religious, mostly Shiite, sites in the country. So far, tens of people have been killed, hundreds of people have gone missing and thousands of others have been injured.
Demonstrators in Bahrain have been demanding constitutional reforms as well as an end to the 230-year-old monarchy, with hundreds camping out peacefully in the capital's Pearl Square since February 14.
Yet, tension has grown high after the Saudi military intervention in Bahrain. Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy's fifth fleet, is viewed as a very sensitive and determining factor in the power equations of the region.
To help the Bahraini government crush the anti-government protests, Saudi Arabia has deployed over 1,000 troops in the country.
