AIRASIA SIGNS US$600 OVER MLN CONTRACT TO PURCHASE AIRCRAFT ENGINES
From D. Arul Rajoo
NEW YORK, May 19 (Bernama) -- AirAsia X Thursday signed a contract, worth
more than US$600 million, to purchase six CF6-80E1 engines from GE Aviation, to
power three new A330-200 aircraft scheduled for delivery beginning 2012.
The long-haul low-cost affiliate of AirAsia Bhd will operate the new
aircraft on its expanding network, offering low fare service to destinations, in
Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
The agreement, with the option of two additional aircraft, was signed here
between AirAsia X, which was represented by its Chief Executive Officer,
Azran Osman Rani, and GE Aviation, by its Vice President and General Manager for
Global Sales, Kevin McAllister, witnessed by Prime Minister Najib
Tun Razak.
The premier is currently on a three-day working visit to New York which ends
on Thursday.
Also present were AirAsia X Chairman Rafidah Aziz and Co-Founder and
Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Bhd Tony Fernandes.
In a brief remark before the signing ceremony, Najib said he was delighted
with the partnership which promised to be exciting and productive.
"Because, I do know when you operate a low-cost carrier, you have to be as
competitive as you can. Part of being competitive is how to reduce operation
cost," he said.
Najib said AirAsia, being one of the best low-cost carrier in the world, had
done the country proud and the partnership would be more fruitful in the future.
The GE engine will enhance AirAsia X's long-haul operations as it will
provide greater range, improved fuel burn and proven stail-free reliability.
The A330-200, which is capable of flying non-stop from Kuala Lumpur to
Europe, will be configured into a two-class layout with 24 premium flatbeds and
264 economy seats.
Meanwhile, Azran said the GE engine was selected as it suited AirAsia X's
long-haul operations and fuel efficiency which was one of the lowest at 2.18
liters per seat per km.
He said the airline would expand its fleet from its present 11 wide-bodied
aircraft to 38 by 2020 and was finalising engine purchase for the remaining 27.
