TI-M, NKRA'S CORRUPTION WATCH DIVISION AGAINST FOREIGN FUNDING IN ELECTIONS
PUTRAJAYA, May 20 (Bernama) -- Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M)and the National Key Result Areas (NKRA ) Monitoring and Coordination Division (Corruption) Thursday agreed that foreign funding should not be allowed in any election held in the country.
The division's director Hisham Nordin said all political parties should make their own efforts to find money instead of taking funds from foreign sources.
"This will make sure politicians are not obligated to others in the event they win in an election," he said at a joint press conference with TI-M President Paul Low here Thursday.
He added that at the moment there were no rules on this and that it was high time the matter was addressed.
Low said he did not know whether there were political parties in the country sourcing funding from abroad because nobody made any disclosure on this.
He suggested that federal and state governments should provide funding for all candidates for parliamentary and state elections regardless of political affiliations.
