BERNAMA RENEW PLEDGE TO PROVIDE NEWS DESPITE CHALLENGES OF NEW MEDIA
KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency
(Bernama) has renewed its pledge to continue its mission to provide and widely
disseminate news to its clients and to the people despite facing various
challenges, especially with the emergence of the new media.
Bernama chairman Abdul Rahman Sulaiman said the agency should be wise
in facing the continuous challenges brought about by the information revolution.
"Our goal, when we were first established in 1968, was only to collect and
disseminate information, our clients comprised only newspapers and electronic
media, and that had made us a monopoly because we were the only news agency," he
said in an interview with Radio 24 in conjunction with Bernama's 43rd
anniversary here Friday.
Abdul Rahman said he had personally witnessed the agency's progress as he
had joined Bernama as a senior reporter in 1971 before being appointed as its
Editor-in-Chief in 1989.
"From there, we had seen the challenges before us, including the current
information revolution. We also acknowledge that the emergence of the new media
posed a big challenge to Bernama," he said.
Abdul Rahman said Bernama did not lag far behind the information revolution
as the agency had diversified its products by providing online news through the
Bernama portal service and Short Messaging Service (SMS) news alert.
When asked about balance reporting by Bernama, he said the agency was not
bound to any party, except the Bernama Act 1967.
"Whatever we do, we have to adhere to the Act, which stated, among others,
that Bernama's function is to find and deliver the latest news and information
in an accurate, fair and objective manner for public and national interest
within and outside Malaysia.
"Under the provisions of the Act, whether on political, economic and social
(reporting), our philosophy is to be fair and objective. We have always taken
precautions so that the report will not have any adverse effect on us," he said.
On the plan to expand Bernama's coverage overseas, Abdul Rahman said it all
depended on the agency's financial capacity because to run a bureau overseas
would be very costly.
At present, Bernama has six overseas bureaus, namely in Jakarta, Singapore,
Bangkok, Beijing, Dubai and New Delhi.
In conjunction with Bernama's 43rd birthday, Abdul Rahman also called on all
Bernama staff to renew their pledge to give a better service, not only to
the clients, but also for the nation.
