Khayyam statue unveiled at Spanish university
TEHRAN, May 20 (MNA) -- A statue of the Iranian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) was unveiled at the Complutense University of Madrid during a ceremony on May 18, which is annually celebrated in Iran as Khayyam Day.
A number of Iranian and Spanish cultural figures were invited to participate in the ceremony, the Persian service of Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported on Friday.
Director of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) Mohammad-Baqer Khorramshad, Carmen Escribano Ródenas from San Pablo University, Santiago Escobar Gómez from Complutense University and Jose Francisco Cutillas from Alicante University were among the participants.
An exhibition of books written on Khayyam as well a collection of the Rubaiyat of Khayyam in Spanish was also open on the side section.
The decision to install the statue at the university was made in a discussion between the Iranian cultural attaché Amir Purpezeshk and Complutense Vice-Chancellor for Culture and Sports Juan Manuel Álvarez on April 5.
Khorramshad made a short speech at the ceremony expressing his thanks to the organizers. “As an Iranian, I am pleased that a thousand years after Khayyam’ passing and a thousand kilometers from his birthplace, people have come together here in Spain to discuss the literary and philosophical character of Khayyam.
“There has long been a question of why we and you respect Khayyam. It is because Khayyam was a man of culture and that he was a multicultural person. He wrote articles on mechanics, hydrostatics, meteorology, and music,” he said.
“Khayyam was born in Neyshabur contemporaneous with many of the great people of his time. This shows that Iran was not just the land of poetry, but also of medicine, philosophy, mysticism, mathematics and many other subjects,” he added.
Sculpting the statue was cosponsored by Iran’s Art Bureau and the Islamic Relations and Cultural Organization.
No further details were given about the statue or its creator.
