Kuwait to Free Iranian Prisoners

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian legislator announced that the Kuwaiti government has decided to release a number of Iranian nationals held in the country's prisons on different charges.
"One of the issues discussed during Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi's recent visit to Kuwait was the extradition of a number of Iranian prisoners held in the Kuwaiti jails," member of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mohammad Karami Raad told FNA on Saturday.

He also said that Iran and Kuwait have decided to send back their top diplomats to each other's capitals after the top officials of the two states could remove the misunderstandings between the two Persian Gulf littoral states.

The lawmaker said while Kuwait is due to send back the same diplomat to Tehran for the ambassadorial post, Iran has decided to send the governor-general of the Northern Gilan province to Kuwait to head the Iranian mission in the Arab country.

Earlier, Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker Jassem Mohammad al-Kharafi had announced that the two countries decided to resume their ambassadorial activities.

"Kuwait and Iran's ambassadors will return to the place of their missions," al-Kharafi told reporters after a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Kuwait City on Wednesday.

Salehi arrived in Kuwait at the head of a political delegation on Wednesday. In addition to al-Kharafi, the Iranian top diplomat also held meetings with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahamd al-Sabah, the country's Prime Minister Nasir al-Muhammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah and his Kuwaiti counterpart Muhammad al-Sabah al-Salim al-Sabah.

During the meetings, Salehi and the high-ranking Kuwaiti officials conferred on the political and economic relations between the two countries as well as the latest developments and popular uprisings in the region, specially in Bahrain.
