Hamas Figure Views Obama's Pledges on Palestinian State as "Absurd"

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement said Washington's recent move on the Middle-East conflict serves the interests of the Zionist regime of Israel, adding that the US President's call for a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders won't materialize.
"Everyone knows the US moves have always been in the interests of the Zionist regime and the recent speech of US President Barack Obama is no exception to this rule," Khalil Abu Laila told FNA on Sunday.

"During the speech, Obama pledged establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, but I believe that is an absurd vow and will not be implemented," Abu Laila stressed.

"As before, the US statesmen usually make pledges to Palestinians but their vows are never put into effect," he stated.

Meantime, the Palestinian figure said that Obama made the statements in an effort to push the US out of the current crisis that it is entangled with due to its unconditional support for Israel.

The comments come after US President Barack Obama made a televised speech on Thursday, where he warned Palestinians that they would not gain independence by denying the Israeli regime the "right to exist," claiming that efforts to "de-legitimize Israel" would fail.

Obama also called on Israel to pull back to the borders that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War, calling those lines militarily "indefensible."

The US had previously endorsed the concept of a Palestinian state, but not the demand for permanent pre-1967 borders, with mutually agreed land swaps.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly rejected President Obama's call and claimed that such a withdrawal would jeopardize Israel's security and leave major West Bank settlements outside Israeli borders.
