West has become a symbol of corruption: Iran's senior MP

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) -- Iranian Deputy Majlis Speaker has said that the United States and its Western allies are the main source of corruption in the world, and the West has become a symbol of corruption.

Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabifard made the remarks during a speech at a conference on campaign against corruption, which opened in Tehran yesterday, with the participation of directors of the anti-corruption establishments of member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

The conference will wrap up on Sunday.

In his address to the conference, Aboutorabifard also said that the major source of corruption in the region is the illegitimate regimes that do not enjoy the support of their people but are being supported by the United States.

“Today the West itself has become a symbol of corruption,” he added.

“We have paid a heavy price for campaigning against drugs and defending the oppressed nations, and we will not compromise with the hegemonistic powers,” Aboutorabifard stated.

He also said that campaign against corruption in the member states of ECO requires the cooperation of each and every one of these countries.

Aboutorabifard also announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to share its experiences with regard to tackling corruption with other countries.

The Iranian Economic Affairs and Finance Minister Seyyed Shamseddin Hosseini also delivered a speech at the conference, in which he said that the ECO members must put campaign against terrorism on their agenda.

In addition, Antonino De Leo, who is the representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Iran, addressed the conference and called on the ECO members to use the United Nations Convention against corruption as a blueprint for their efforts in combating corruption.

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey with the aim of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states. In 1992, seven other countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan joined the organization.
