PM NAJIB, WIFE EXTEND SYMPATHIES TO FAMILIES OF LANDSLIDE VICTIMS

From D. Arul Rajoo

WASHINGTON, May 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, have expressed their sadness over Saturday's landslide tragedy in Hulu Langat near Kuala Lumpur which claimed the lives of 16 people, and extended their sympathies to the families of the victims.

"I am most saddened over the tragedy at Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim dan Anak-Anak Hidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa Hulu Langat. It was heartbreaking to hear news of the tragedy, and I, my wife and family are sad over what has happened," Najib told Bernama.

The prime minister said he had instructed the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the mishap.

Najib, who is on a working visit to the United States from May 17, said the government would rebuild the orphanage and the lives of the survivors and extend contributions to the victims of the tragedy.

The landslide occurred at about 2.30pm, claiming the lives of 16 people and injuring nine others.

"Hopefully, the government contributions can help to ease the burden of the victims' families," he said.

Najib said he and Rosmah would visit the scene of the tragedy and meet the families of the victims and the management of the orphanage upon their return to Malaysia on Tuesday.

Rosmah said she had instructed the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) and Selangor Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Noh Omar to ask the Badan Amal dan Kasih Negeri Selangor (Kasih) to visit the families of the victims.

"I have also instructed Bakti treasurer Lee Sun Loo to extend contributions to the families of the dead and injured," she said when conveying condolences and sympathies to the families via live broadcast over Bernama Radio24 Saturday night soon after learning of the tragedy over the SMS.

Rosmah said that as a mother, she was most saddened by the tragedy.

"I was informed that about 70 children had been sent there to attend a 'Teaching in English' programme and that some of them were the victims," she said.
