IMF'S NEW MD WILL BE EUROPEAN, SAYS BANK GOVERNOR

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- Bank Negara Malaysia Governor, Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz expects the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to be an European.

But she also wants to see the selection based on merit.

Speaking to reporters after delivering a keynote address at the
International Centre for Leadership in Finance (Malaysia), here today, she said the new managing director who will oversee the global financial system, must be someone willing to work for the greater good of this world.

Zeti ruled herself out for the job saying: "I am going to be here in Malaysia.

"I have just had my term extended for another five years. I am very
determined to ensure Malaysia transitions to become a developed economy."

As to who Malaysia prefers for the job, she said there had been no
discussion as yet on it, between the central bank and the Ministry of Finance.

"We haven't really had any discussions with the Ministry of Finance. Traditionally, it has been a European and most likely, will continue to be a European."
