NO RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION DETECTED SINCE APRIL 2

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - No radioactive contamination has been detected in all samples of rain water, sea water, piped water and soil analysed since April 2 following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili said
monitoring through the Environment Radiation Monitoring System in Chuping, Ipoh, Senai, Melaka, Kuantan, Sri Aman and Kudat showed normal radiation levels.

"In fact, monitoring through the Portable Monitoring System at the Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching International Airports have so far showed no radioactive contamination," he said in a statement, here, Monday.

Ongkili said screening of passengers and luggage, as well as industrial products from Japan for radioactive contamination was not required in Malaysia, but the Atomic Energy Licensing Board and Malaysian Nuclear Agency offered the service to individuals for free.

"Industries which still need confirmation that their (non-food) products imported from Japan are free of radioactive contamination can obtain the service from the agency," he said.
