MINISTRY WANTS TO EXPAND CO-OP BUSINESS TO INT LEVEL

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will establish a working relationship with the Indonesian Cooperatives Ministry as a first step towards expanding the Malaysian cooperative business to the international level.

The minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said Monday the move was part of efforts to market the products of Malaysian cooperatives in Asean countries besides reducing the import of similar goods from them.

"We want to diversify products that are not based on food or drinks and Indonesia also has a lot of that kind of products," he told reporters after launching the three-day Federal Territory Cooperatives Carnival at Medan Tunku here.

Ismail said the ministry was also holding discussions with Singapore cooperatives which had no products of their own and were in the import business.

"I have suggested to them that they import directly from Malaysia because our products are good and cheap," he said.

He was not satisfied with the performance of Malaysian cooperatives which he said only contributed one per cent to the Gross Domestic Product although they were about 8,000 in number with three million active members.

Ismail suggested that the cooperatives form mergers to produce a
variety of quality products.

"We should be able to contribute at least five per cent to the GDP by 2013," he said.
