Laos to host 31st Asean police meeting
VIENTIANE,MAY.(KPL) - Laos will host the 31st Asean Chiefs of Police (Aseanapol) Conference later this month, meeting up with other Asean nations and dialogue partners to share crime-solving experiences.
The Ministry of Public Security reported at a press conference yesterday that this year it was the turn of Laos to host the conference. The meeting would reinforce the efforts of police in Asean countries to tackle crime.
Director General of the Police Department Colonel Sisavath Keomalavong said preparations for the meeting were almost complete. “We are confident we will have everything ready by the day. ”
The ministry declined to say which day the meeting would be held for security reasons, saying only it would be held at the end of this month or early next month.
“We are sorry we can’t announce the actual day of the meeting due to security concerns. But what we can say is that the conference aims to bolster cooperation in tackling crime in the region,” Colonel Sisavath said.
The major objective of the meeting is to discuss security cooperation among police in Asean countries. The conference will address preventing and solving transnational crimes, not only in Asean nations but in the dialogue partner countries of China, Japan, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Discussions will also include three related international organisations.
“We will discuss the drug trade, terrorists, weapons trade, human trafficking, economic crimes and banking problems such as money laundering and fake ATMs. Such crimes affect political stability, the economy, social and cultural progress and the development of this region and the world,” Colonel Sisavath said.
The conference will also serve to improve police working methods, law enforcement, public security and social order.
The Police Department said its staff had benefited by discussing such topics at the 30th Aseanapol held in Cambodia last year.
They hope this year’s meeting will be similarly beneficial, and another meeting will be arranged in Myanmar for next year.
