SIRIM'S INNOVATIONS SEE SUCCESS IN ITEX 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) -- Three of 11 innovations contested by Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) have won gold awards at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2011).

Nine other innovations received bronze awards and two took silver awards at the exhibition which was held here from May 20-22, a statement from Sirim said Tuesday.

The innovations were the combined works of 56 Sirim researchers who had participated at the event, said the research and technology company.

Among the gold winning innovations was the Green Acquaculture System which won under the agriculture category.

The system uses a floating controller for generating solar power for use by fish breeders to help monitor the contents of their pool water accurately while saving on labour cost and electricity.

Other two products awarded were for a colouring system to help small scale textile manufacturers to coordinate their colouring work more efficiently and a powder produced from waste plastic to be used in the medical area during surgery and implants. The former award was won under the textile category while the latter won under the materials/substance category.

The ITEX brought together 650 innovations from local researchers as well as from participants from several countries including China, Korea, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
