SOCIAL NETWORKING CAN HELP EXPAND MARKET FOR M'SIAN COMPANIES

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysian companies interested in
expanding their markets should not ignore the vast potential of social
networking that accounts for 71 per cent of online activities across the nation.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) Chief Executive Officer Norahuddin Nordin told a conference on digital marketing here Tuesday that one should not ignore the fact that social networking has become the most prominent virtual platform in Malaysia.

The Malaysian advertising market across all media recorded an overall increase of 16 per cent in 2010 to close the year at RM7.7 billion with the Internet recording the second highest growth in advertising spending, from RM40.44 million in 2009 to RM52.15 million in 2010. (US$1=RM3.05)

“This 29 per cent growth signals a significant rise in interest among marketers,” he told the one-day Marketing and Branding Conference organised by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).

He also pointed out that Malaysians spend more time assessing the Internet now compared with previous years with the Internet usage reaching 41 per cent in 2010 compared with 25 per cent in 2009.

Meanwhile, in his opening remarks, FMM President Mustafa Mansur said Malaysia ranks second in the Asia Pacific region in terms of social media network penetration, with more than 66 per cent of its online population visiting sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, blogs and Linked In.

He called upon Malaysian companies to embrace social media as a new and growing marketing tool.

In his keynote address, Maxis Communications Bhd's Head of Commercial & SME Business Kenneth Lee gave participants a preview of the future digital world and how rapidly it would change the business to business interaction, business to consumer interaction, and the way families communicate with each other.

“New developments are coming at speeds you cannot imagine,” he said.

Other speakers at the conference attended by more than 150 participants from a cross section of the Malaysian industry included Darren George of TNS Research International Malaysia who spoke on ‘The Malaysian Digital Consumer’, Au Yong Eng Lim of Maybank who spoke on the success of Maybank2u.com portal, and Leonard Lee of MNC Wireless Bhd on ‘Social Media Marketing’.
