Iranian FM Underlines Importance of Persian Gulf Security

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi underscored the importance of maintaining security in the Persian Gulf region, and called on the littoral states to settle their problems through dialogue and negotiations.
Addressing an audience at China's International Studies Institute on Monday, Salehi described the Persian Gulf as a strategic region for the Islamic Republic of Iran, region and the world.
He described maintenance of security in the Persian Gulf region as a priority for Tehran.
Salehi further voiced satisfaction with his recent visits to certain Persian Gulf littoral states and his straightforward and sincere talks with the neighboring Arab officials, which he said was aimed at reinvigorating relations and removing the possible misunderstandings between Tehran and the other riparian states.
After returning from his regional tour last week, the Iranian top diplomat had reiterated that all the Persian Gulf littoral states favor collective cooperation among the regional countries for the establishment of peace and security.
"In our visits of some Persian Gulf countries I felt that along with Iran, all regional countries, too, favor a comprehensive cooperation aimed at boosting regional security and stability, because such a matter is to the benefit of the entire countries," Salehi said upon arrival in Tehran from a daylong visit to Kuwait.
Kuwait came on the fifth leg of Salehi's regional tour in the last three weeks.
Salehi had earlier visited a number of regional states and met with their senior officials on bilateral ties and recent developments in the region, specially the revolution in Bahrain.
Salehi visited Baghdad last week, where he conferred with senior Iraqi officials on bilateral and regional issues.
Earlier in May, Salehi, heading a high-ranking Iranian delegation, arrived in Doha for an official daylong visit to the Muslim Persian Gulf state.
Prior to that Salehi visited the Omani capital of Muscat to hold talks with senior Omani officials, including Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Saidon, on regional developments and bilateral ties.
The tour also took the Iranian foreign minister to Abu Dhabi, where he discussed bilateral ties and regional issues in meetings with senior United Arab Emirates (UAE) official, including Emirati prime minister and foreign minister, during his daylong trip.
