Iranian Envoy Welcomes Agreement among Palestinian Groups as Positive Step
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Uruguay Hojjatollah Soltani underlined the significance of the national unity deal signed by the different Palestinian groups earlier this month, describing it as a positive step towards a stronger Palestinian unity against the Zionist regime.
"We see this agreement as a positive move since when the Palestinian nation gets united, it enjoys more power and capacity to confront the Israeli regime," Soltani told the French daily, Liberation on Tuesday.
He voiced regret that Israel had been able to sow discord among the different Palestinian groups to attain its ominous goals for years prior to the recent Palestinian unity deal, "but now Israel's dream has come to an end".
"Palestinian groups have reached an internal agreement which serves the interests of the Palestinian nation the most and harms Israel more anyone else," Soltani said.
Earlier this month, thirteen Palestinian groups including, Fatah and Hamas, signed a landmark unity deal ending their long-running division.
Prior to the agreement, the Islamic movement Hamas was at loggerheads with Fatah, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, since Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January of 2006. After winning the elections, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip ending months of bloody conflict with Fatah allied security forces. Egypt and other Arab countries' attempts of reaching a reconciliation deal between the two largest Palestinian factions had earlier failed.
Earlier this week, a senior analyst had said that the main Palestinian groups, Fatah and Hamas, will form a national unity government in weeks.
"They think that the two sides will agree on the formation of the Palestinian government by the next few weeks," Head of the Center for Near-East Regional Research Majid Ghazan told FNA.
According to internal sources, the agreement includes formation of a caretaker government until elections take place in both the West Bank and Gaza.
