Iran Launches New Vessels, Boats

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian defense ministry launched several different types of vessels in the country's Southern port cities of Khorramshahr and Bandar Abbas on Tuesday.
During the ceremony attended by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, 10 landing crafts, a barge and a tug were launched and handed to costumers.
The ceremony was held on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the liberation of the Iranian city of Khorramshahr from Iraqi occupation back in 1982.
Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's forces captured the port city of Khorramshahr on October 26, 1980 in a surprise attack in the early days of the Iraqi-imposed war on Iran (1980-1988), but Iranian forces liberated the city on 3rd of Khordad (May 24, 1982) in a massive military operation named 'Beit-al-Moqaddas'.
Addressing the ceremony, Vahidi said, "The vessels have been built at the order of the private sector and as part of plans for expanding naval transportation and boosting the region's economic prosperity."
He said that the body of the landing crafts and their steel-plated structure enable loading and reloading in areas that lacks wharf.
Also with regard to the other vessels launched today, Vahidi said that the newly launched barge is equipped with advanced navigation and communication system and is able to carry cargos with a maximum total weight of 750 tons.
