Marine Corps officer indicted on bribery charges

SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- Military prosecutors on Thursday indicted a major of the Marine Corps for allegedly taking bribes from construction firms in exchange for business favors, the latest corruption case involving the military.
The major, identified only by his surname Sohn, was suspected of receiving some 400 million won (US$366,637) in cash from 2005 to 2009 while he served as a supervisor for several construction projects placed by the Marine Corps, prosecutors said in a statement.
The investigation into the bribery allegation originally began in 2006 after tips from a whistle-blower within the military, but it was halted until February 2010 because the informant fled to a foreign country, according to the statement.
The probe resumed as prosecutors found evidence that Sohn took bribes while they searched his bank accounts, the statement said.
The latest indictment came about a week after two senior Air Force officers were indicted on charges of taking bribes in return for helping construction firms win or maintain military contracts.
The military has often been plagued by corruption scandals amid a widespread belief that bribes and backroom deals might help private firms win military contracts.
