MALAYSIA'S GARDEN BAGS GOLD AT CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Tourism Malaysia garden, based on a concept of winding jungle streams and architecture of the "kelong" (traditional fish farm), has won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show 2011 in London.
It was Tourism Malaysia's second consecutive win at the floral exhibition, billed as one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world.
The garden has welcomed numerous visitors, including England's Queen Elizabeth II.
The monarch was received by Malaysian Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen and the country's tourism ambassador, Jimmy Choo, according to a statement from Tourism Malaysia.
The garden was designed by the award-winning duo who were at the helm of Malaysia's success last year -- ethnobotanists James Wong, who is of Malaysian descent, and David Cubero.
It is accessed through a series of floating entrance frames that lead from a stilted villa to a sunken seating pavilion, surrounded by a pool embellished with drifts of fragrant tropical water lilies.
Others personalities and celebrities who visited the garden included Prince Albert of Monaco, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Andrew.
"Through its participation at the Chelsea Flower Show, Tourism Malaysia aims to promote Malaysia as a destination for ecotourism that offers beautiful sights and natural beauty through its parks and gardens, particularly to nature enthusiasts and horticulturists," said Tourism Malaysia.
This year's edition has attracted over 600 participating exhibitors
from around the the globe, showcasing 17 show gardens, 100 growers and nurseries as well as 250 trade stands.
It is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society of the United Kingdom.
