Turkey hopes to reach nuclear plant deal with Japan by year-end
TOKYO, May 28 Kyodo - Turkey hopes to reach an agreement with Japan by the end of this year on the construction of a nuclear power plant at its northern coastal city of Sinop, Turkish Ambassador to Japan Abdurrahman Bilgic said Friday.
An agreement by the year-end will allow Turkey to start the plant's operation by 2019 as originally planned, he said during a press conference at the Japan National Press Club, urging the Japanese side to reopen negotiations halted by the nuclear crisis in northeastern Japan induced by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Bilgic added, however, that Turkey will not set a deadline for negotiations with Japan, showing understanding on the situation in Japan, which is still grappling with the aftermath of the disasters.
The ambassador also said the Turkish government has recently conveyed to Japan its intention to launch talks for a bilateral free trade agreement.
Officials from Turkey's foreign ministry will come to Japan in July to begin preparatory discussions on the matter.
Japan has been in negotiations with Turkey for exporting nuclear power plant technologies. Turkey has decided to extend the deadline of the negotiations from the previously set end of March.
Bilgic emphasized his country is pressing ahead with plans to build its first nuclear plant despite concerns raised by the crisis at the Japanese nuclear plant.
