ISO Technical Committee Welcomes Iran's Proposals

TEHRAN (FNA)- The 12th meeting of the International Standardization Organization's Technical Committee (ISO/TC229) endorsed Iran's proposals in its May meeting in Russia.
The ISO meeting was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from May 16 to 20, 2011, with representatives of 20 countries in attendance.

During the meeting, the Iranian delegation presented two standardization proposals that were admitted by the members for further study.

Studying the plan entitled "Indices for the Evaluation of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in the World", which was proposed by Iran last year, was one of the issues discussed in this year's meeting.

After the plan was proposed by Iran, members of the first workgroup (of Definitions and Terminology) of the committee agreed that the proposal should be considered for introducing an international standard.

Members decided to task Iran with compiling the standard proposal to put it to vote in the next meeting. It was also decided that Iran would negotiate and cooperate with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as the representative of ISO in order to prevent parallel work in the compilation of standards.

The second session for defending the standard suggested by Iran was held in Safety and Environment Workgroup; the proposed standard was entitled "Measurement of Muramic Acid for the Determination of the Antibacterial Activity of Nanosilver". This subject had been proposed and approved in the previous meeting.

In the fourth workgroup of the committee (Characteristics of Nanomaterials), a specific group led by Iran has been established since three meetings ago. The programs and working methodology of this group, that is called Nanomaterials Classification, were presented by Iran in this year's meeting.

The International Organization of Standardization Technical Committee (ISO/TC229) has so far published 12 standards among which one was proposed and compiled by Iran, and was published by ISO. Periodical meetings of ISO/TC229 are held biannually in one of the member countries.

Since the third meeting, Iran has had a continuous and active participation in the meetings. The next meeting of the committee will be held in South Africa.
