HERO WORSHIP – JAYALALITHAA’S FANS CUT OFF TONGUE, THUMB
BY P, VIJIAN
CHENNAI, May 30 (Bernama) -- Staunch women party supporters have gone to extremes to venerate the charismatic J.Jayalalithaa, newly-elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, some even chopping off their tongues and fingers in fulfilling their sacred vows after her superb victory in the state legislative assembly polls.
In Salem, about 400 kilometres from Chennai, a woman supporter, Vaani Palanisamy, sliced off her thumb in a temple just to fulfil her vow on Sunday.
"I had gone out on party-related work. When I returned I was told that my wife had cut off her thumb," Vaani's husband P. Palaniswamy, a weaver, told the media, reported the Times of India.
But that was not an isolated incident in the state, known for extreme idolising of politicians and cinema actors.
Immediately after the election results were announced on May 13, K. Saritha cut off her tongue in a temple in Ramanthapuram district, in a show of hero worship.
Doctors managed to stitch her tongue back.
But in return, these women were financially rewarded by the Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (AIADMK) party.
For her daring act, Vaani was given 40,000 Indian rupees (RM2,750) while Saritha received 100,000 rupees (RM6,900).
Also on Sunday, Venkatesan, 28, a die-hard fan of south India's movie superstar Rajinikanth killed himself in his village, unable to bear news of the actor's deteriorating health condition.
