GOVT REMAINS CONNECTED TO YOUTH OF MALAYSIA, SAYS PM NAJIB
PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), May 31 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak said Tuesday he is investing much of his own time and that of the government to ensure that the government remains connected to and engaged with the young people and the youth of the country.
The prime minister said he believed in the youth of Malaysia and urged them not to look back but look forward in whatever they are doing.
Najib said young Malaysians and the youth had a critical role to play in the country's journey to achieve developed nation status by 2020 and the ongoing effort to transform the nation.
"You have a crucial role to play ... bear in mind that this is the country that you are shaping for your generation and the next," he said in his opening remark at the mentoring session of the Youth Action Forum 2011, here.
The Youth Action Forum was organised as part of the inaugural Youth Nation Summit 2011 by myHarapan and AIESEC Malaysia.
Najib said the government and its agencies were opening doors for the young people of the country because the government recognised youth as part of the solution not only for today but also tomorrow.
He said the voice of the young needed to be heard.
"We can galvanise the youth to reach out to the urban poor and the rural poor... they need your help."
He said today's world was different and everyone, including the government, had to adopt to the ever-changing world.
"We cannot use the same, old methods to engage the new world and environment ... we need a fresh and open mind to understand the new generation born after 1980."
Besides being provided with opportunities, they should also be empowered to pursue their dreams, he said.
Najib said Malaysia had achieved a lot today because the government had put in place a quality education for the people, built excellent infrastructure, provided healthcare services, put in place sound financial management, and managed very well and strengthened the unity of various ethnic groups.
He told the 20 mentees that he was very excited to attend the session with them, adding that it was an occasion to be remembered by both sides.
"I hope to live up to your expectations and learn something new from you all," he said.
"I believe all 20 of you can be inspiring role models in your own ways to your peers ... with this role comes responsibility to your peers and the country," he said, adding that what was being done today was also in tandem with the government's focus on the youth.
"I can see the enthusiasm on you face," said Najib, who also received a declaration from them on consolidation of input, insights, recommendations and suggestions from the first two days of the Youth Nation Summit 2011.
Later, after a luncheon with some 350 youth leaders, Najib said he had a very strong impression of the 20 mentees in terms of their commitment, sense of idealism and enthusiasm.
He said he listened to them very attentively during the session, which lasted for about an hour.
"They want to make a difference to this nation of ours ... so
congratulations to the 20 leaders who represented all of you," said Najib, who was given a standing ovation when he entered the ballroom.
The mentoring session was a closed-door strategic discussion with the prime minister on economic, social and environmental sustainability issues and they had put forth their recommendations on specific policy matters.
