Iranian DM, Mauritanian President Discuss Bilateral Defense Ties

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, and explored ways to boost mutual cooperation in defensive fields.
Vahidi who is on his way to Bolivia for a two-day official visit had a short stop in Nouakchott on Tuesday and met with the president of the Northwestern African country.

During the meeting, Abdel Aziz underlined the importance of his country's ties with Iran, and said, "The two countries' capacities should be activated to further strengthen and develop their ties."

He also reiterated that the current conditions in the world necessitate all Muslim states to side with each other.

Vahidi, for his part, said the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches much importance to its ties with Africa, specially with Mauritania.

He pointed to the two countries' common cultural values and shared political views on regional and international issues, and added, "Fortunately, the two countries enjoy very good bilateral ties in all fields and given the two sides' resolve, we hope for an accelerated trend of the development of bilateral ties."

Iran has in the past few years shown increasing willingness to expand ties and cooperation with Africa and offered to transfer experience and technology to several African countries.

Since taking office in 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has striven hard to maximize Tehran's relations with the African continent.

Tehran has prioritized promotion of its economic and political ties with the African states and the country is now considered as one of the African Union's strategic partners.
