Politician Sees no Benefit in Washington-Kabul Strategic Pact for Afghans

TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Afghan analyst underlined on Wednesday that establishment of security in his country should be a prerequisite for the Afghan endorsement of a strategic partnership pact with the US, and warned the Karzai government against the harmful result of the agreement for Afghanistan.
Speaking to FNA, Sardar Mohammad Rahman Uqli said that the US-Afghanistan strategic agreement will be a source of trouble for both sides.
Tahman Uqli further underscored that the Kabul government should not conclude the agreement, and that "all steps should be taken within the framework of Afghanistan's Constitution".
He also underlined that Afghanistan's security highly affects the people's decision on the issue, and noted, "The Afghan people should decide on the issue in an atmosphere of security and free from security concerns."
"It is not right to talk about a strategic agreement and permanent bases before establishment of security in the country," the analyst noted.
President Karzai has recently stated that the US intends to establish permanent military bases in Afghanistan. The United States has for long been eying on Kabul, Bagram, Kandahar, Shindad and Herat as its military bases. These places are being speedily fortified and modernized. However, resurgence of Taliban, war weariness, haywire economy and uprisings in Middle-East and Africa are compelling America to call it a day.
If an agreement is reached on the permanent bases, US troops will remain on the Afghan soil beyond 2014, when they are scheduled to transfer their security responsibilities to Afghan forces.
President Karzai said last month that having strategic partnership with White House required the approval of Afghan traditional Loya Jirga or grand assembly of elders and tribal chieftains and Afghan parliament.
Iran has many times urged withdrawal of foreign forces from the region, describing it as the only way to restore peace and tranquility in this part of the world.
