NIKON DOESN'T SEE MOBILE PHONES WITH CAMERA FEATURES AS THREAT TO BUSINESS

By Mohd Khairi Idham
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Renowned camera manufacturer Nikon
believes that mobile phones with picture-taking features will not be a threat
to the company's business but will instead complement it as they can
help enhance the photography culture, says a company official.

Masanobu Tsunoda, the managing director of Nikon Malaysia and
Singapore, said Nikon had been discussing the matter over the last 10
years and found that mobile phones actually helped to increase the
company's business.

This was because those who had been taking pictures with mobile
phones would experience time lags in shutter speeds and poorer picture
quality and would eventually migrate to high quality cameras if they
were serious about taking pictures, he said.

"As long as everyone is enjoying taking pictures from their mobile
phones, they (mobile phones) will help develop the photography culture
and we believe that mobile phones are our friends," he told Bernama
after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the national
news agency here Friday.

The MoU was for the supply 40 DSLRs camera worth RM1.2 million ((US$0.4
million) to the national news agency as part of the latter's efforts to upgrade
its photograhic equipment. Bernama was represented by its General Manager,
Hasnul Hassan.

Tsunoda said mobile phones could be the starting or entry point for
people getting to know photography before becoming involved with more
advanced cameras such as digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, which Nikon
was renowned as the world market leader.

Nikon Malaysia General Manager David Ng Choon Yiak said the Facebook
phenomenon was also helping in the sales of DSLR cameras.

Asked on the company's sales target in Malaysia this year, he said it
was looking at an increase of 40 per cent from last year's RM280 million
(US$93.33 million) on the back of robust economic growth and strong camera
market expansion in the country.

"We are targeting RM400 million (US$133.33 million)(in sales) for 2011. We
are very positive on the (camera) market expansion and the Malaysian economy,"
Ng said.

Currently, Nikon Malaysia holds 31 per cent of the camera market in Malaysia
and is the number one brand for the DSLR camera segment with a market
share of 48 per cent.

The company is also the second preferred choice for compact cameras
and holds a 18 per cent market share in Malaysia.

Ng also believed that that the Nikon Centre located at Berjaya Times
Square shopping mall here had been instrumental in the company's sales growth.

The centre, which is Nikon's largest photography showroom in Southeast Asia,
acts as a one-stop-centre for Nikon's users and would-be customers to browse the
entire range of Nikon equipment.

Ng said the centre's establishment was also in line with the company's
objectives of promoting the photography culture as well as educating consumers,
especially the young, on the positive aspects of photography as a hobby.
