Chairman of the Turkish Union of Chambers in Washington
WASHINGTON (A.A) - 03.06.2011 - Chairman of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), Rifat Hisarciklioglu, said on Thursday that they would work with Harvard University of the United States and produce projects in which Turkey's most rapidly growing 25 companies and their equals in the United States would launch joint investments.
Hisarciklioglu, currently on a visit to Washington, addressed a reception hosted by Turkish-American Associations Assembly and Federation of Turkish-American Associations .
Referring to Turkish-U.S. relations, Hisarciklioglu said high level political and military relations between the two countries were not reflected to economic relations. He said Turkey's economic relations with the United States was weak and described the relations as, "a drop in the sea".
"Although Turkey's exports to all countries increased in the past five years, it dropped with the U.S. This is because businessmen of the two countries do not know each other well. There is lack of information in both sides," he noted.
"Turkey has to take place in U.S. market to achieve its target to become one of the biggest economies of the world. We need some mechanisms to be in this market," he said.
Responding to a question, Hisarciklioglu said Turkey's trade increased 40 percent with Israel but there was a significant drop in tourism. "Some of the goods sold to Israel were sent to Palestine. However, we do not have the chance to differentiate this," he noted.
Hisarciklioglu underlined importance of improvement of bilateral relations and noted that particularly the Turkish institutions in the United States have to assume responsibilities on the matter. He also called on Turkish institutions in the United States and Turkish people living in this country to get integrated and be organized.
Hisarciklioglu said World Turkish Business Council was established to convene Turkish Businessmen in the world under one roof.
Responding to a question, Hisarciklioglu said he attended the "Partners for a New Beginning (PNB) Summit" in Washington.
"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended the summit dinner and said U.S. President Barack Obama wanted to join the Entrepreneurship Summit which will take place in Turkey this year," he said.
The PNB initiative was established by the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Chairman of the Aspen Institute Walter Isaacson and Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola corporation Muhtar Kent on April 27, 2010 in order to meet the "new beginning" aim of U.S. President Barack Obama as stated in a speech delivered in Cairo.
The PNB was formed to promote United States' economic, scientific and educational relations with countries whose majority of the population was comprised of Muslims.
Among the targets of the PNB is Turkey. The Turkish leg of the PNB is being carried out by a Steering Committee led by Rifat Hisarciklioglu who argues that the good political and military relations between Ankara and Washington should also reflect on economic relations.
